LAJKÓ FÉLIX

 

Lajkó Félix was born on December 17, 1974 in Subotica. This virtuoso violinist played the violin since he was twelve and has since then won the most prestigious music awards both in Yugoslavia and Hungary. Félix is an ethnic Hungarian world music violinist and composer. His music is difficult to categorize as it is based on wide spectrum of influences of traditional string music from Pannonian plain. It can be viewed as a specific form of jazz, but based on traditional music of Hungary and Vojvodina.

He played jazz with the Dresch Quartet, performed modern music with the Hungarian composer and musician Szabados Győrgy, and was a member of the Ensemble of Ritual Nova of Boris Kovac. Félix also performed with the musician from London of Romanian origin Alexander Balanescu, as well as with Min Tanaka (Japan), and Noir Désir (France). His most significant partnership is considered to be the cooperation with Boban Markovic. He played in Budapest, Prague, Berlin, Belgrade, Paris, Tokio, Bordeaux, Frankfurt, Edinburgh, Bratislava, Venice, Veronna, Wuppertal, and Monte Carlo. He held two Romanian tours in the same year. In 2001 Felix made an appearance at the famous theatre festival in Avignon, as well as on the prestigious Theatre de la Ville manifestation in Paris. Félix was met with a warm welcome at the Pina Bausch Festival in Wuppertal. He wrote music for theatre and film in Serbian and Hungarian production. The famous Hungarian film director Miklós Jancsó made a film on Lajkó Félix in 1999.

He was awarded the Young Artist award in Hungary, and Pro Urbe award for 2000 from his hometown Subotica.

Félix is a virtuoso violinist, playing with great fervor and passion, and occasionally he plays other traditional instruments, such as cimbalom. On concerts, he usually performs with his small band, but sometimes also plays solo violin.

Lajkó Félix and Boban & Marko Markovic Orchestra

The leaders of the world music revival in Serbia, Lajkó Félix and Boban Markovic, first met in 1999 during the music recordings for the motion picture Tockovi (Wheels), and their concert at the Sava Centre followed soon afterwards. Since then Félix released several albums and performed with a large number of world famous musicians, while Boban and his orchestra released an album for the foreign market which gained them tremendous success, leading to their having performances on almost every continent, with over a hundred concerts per year. In the meantime, the world music phenomenon became very fashionable and a huge hit in Serbia. Boban and Lajkó, coming from two different parts of Serbia, make an authentic music experience united with their passion for music.

From the musician with the biggest potential on the Serbian world music scene, Lajkó Félix has transformed to a wildly creative author with a unique musical identity and a family man. His concert at the Sava Centre was marked by the guest appearance by Boban Markovic's son Marko, a trumpet player and the future star of Serbian world music. Although he is only eighteen years old, Marko is already the main soloist and arranger in his father's band and is also in charge of the preparations for music duels with Lajkó Félix.
